Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 23, 2026  ·  Applies to the Similar Finder Chrome Extension

The short version

The extension only reads or sends any data when you explicitly ask it to search. Nothing runs in the background. No browsing history is recorded. We don't sell data.

Overview

Similar Finder is a Chrome extension that helps you find visually similar products and compare prices across stores. This policy explains what data the extension processes, when, and why.

The short version: the extension does nothing until you ask it to. No background monitoring, no browsing history collection, no passive data collection of any kind.

What triggers data processing

The extension only reads or transmits any data when you take one of these two explicit actions:

  • You right-click a product image and select “Find similar products”
  • You click the extension toolbar icon to search the current page

What data is sent to our service

When you trigger a search, the following information is sent to our search API to perform the request:

  • The URL of the product image you selected
  • The URL of the webpage you searched from (source page URL)
  • Product metadata detected on the page, if available: product name, price, currency, brand
  • Your selected shipping country (defaults to your browser's locale; adjustable in the extension)
  • Any optional description text you enter in the search panel

What data we never collect

  • Your browsing history
  • Pages you visit where you did not trigger a search
  • Personally identifiable information (name, email, address)
  • Passwords, payment information, or authentication credentials
  • The full content or HTML of any page
  • Any data from pages in the background

Anonymous usage analytics

The extension may collect anonymous, non-identifiable events to help us understand how the product is used and improve it. These events include things like: search started, search results returned, product link clicked, and sort option changed.

These events do not include URLs, product names, search queries, or any information that could identify you. They are used solely to improve the extension and are never sold or shared.

Data retention and sharing

  • Search requests are processed in real time and are not permanently stored in a form linked to you
  • We do not sell user data to any third party
  • We do not share data with advertisers
  • We do not use data to build user profiles or track individuals across sessions
  • We do not use data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes

Permissions the extension requests

The extension requests the following Chrome permissions, each with a specific and narrow purpose:

  • activeTab — read the current tab's URL when you open the extension. Only accessed on explicit user action.
  • scripting — inject the product detection script into the active tab when you click the toolbar icon.
  • contextMenus — add the “Find similar products” option to the image right-click menu.
  • sidePanel — display search results in the browser side panel.
  • storage — remember whether you have seen the first-run onboarding message.

Content scripts

The extension's content script is declared to run on all URLs so it can respond to product detection requests on any website you choose to search from. However, the script only performs work when you explicitly trigger a search — it does not monitor page activity, read page content, or transmit any data on its own.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the date below and, where appropriate, notify users via the extension or the Chrome Web Store listing.
